UPEK, WinMagic Partner on fingerprints

WinMagic, an Ontario-based security software company has announced an agreement with fingerprint vendor UPEK to offer new security products that enable users to better protect their data. The companies’ integrated solution is being demonstrated at the RSA Conference 2008.

Enterprise businesses and government organizations face significant risks and penalties when laptops or portable storage media, containing valuable data assets or personal identifiable information (PII), go missing. WinMagic’s SecureDoc end point data protection suite safeguards proprietary information and personal information stored on mobile computers and portable media. The agreements adds support for Emeryville, Calif.-based UPEK’s fingerprint authentication. [end] 

In their investigation of a Chinese woman accused of credit card theft, Japanese police discovered that the woman had had her fingerprints surgically altered, according to an Epoch Time article. The woman, named Lin Xiuai, confessed to having a special clinic China perform the surgery to have her fingerprints changed for the equivalent of just under $4,500 due to wanting to enter Japan and having being arrested there in 2001 for suspicion of illegally entering the country. The surgery was successful enough that it enabled her to pass the biometric checkpoints at the airport.

Sagem Wireless, a developer of mobile devices and related services, announced that through a partnership with biometrics developer UPEK they will be releasing fingerprint identity capabilities to a number of mobile devices including Android-based devices. Sagem and UPEK are hoping the new offering to be integral as use of banking and other sensitive transactions over mobile devices increases.

SecuGen has one focus, fingerprint biometrics, says Jeffrey Brown, vice president of sales and marketing at the company. The company manufacturers its optical fingerprint scanners and also produces its own matching algorithms for use in many markets, devices and surroundings.

UPEK, a developer of biometric solutions, has announced the release of a new version of their Protector Suite 2009 fingerprint sensor software that now supports the Microsoft Windows 7 operating system by incorporating support for its Windows Biometric Framework. In doing so, UPEK has assured that its software suite will now work hand-in-hand with any of the many fingerprint sensors also supported by the framework.

AuthenTec, a developer of fingerprint and other biometric solutions, has announced its rejection of a bid by fellow biometrics developer UPEK for a merger, according to an Orlando Sentinel article. Officials from AuthenTec called the unsolicited proposed deal, which would have required the replacement of AuthenTec’s entire board of directors, “a highly dilutive and speculative transaction.”
