U.S. DoD expands accepted PKI parties

A new policy at the U.S. Department of Defense allows contractors and agencies working together to accept external authorities that issue PKI certifications. Those authorities, such as VeriSign and IdenTrust, must as a condition use identification cards that are compliant with federal PIV standards.

Alice Lipowicz writes that Paul Grant, DoD CIO, believes that this expansion will “have a major impact on the acceptance of PKI. It is going to get momentum now.”

Shifting focus from technology to legal ramifications of identity

In the area of identity management there has been significant work related to the technical exchange of identity information and the actual authentication processes. There has not, however, been a focused look at the legal issues, particularly those that would hold parties responsible for not properly identifying and authenticating users or customers.
