Insurance company finds authentication solution in Cryptocard

Monday, August 25, 2008

Kansas City Life Insurance Company reports that after a year with their Cryptocard authentication system they have found a system that works the way they had hoped, according to a Dark Reading article. Cryptocard was the second vendor the insurance company went to in an effort to help solve their needs for two-factor authentication since bringing their company online earlier in the decade.

Originally the company used RSA to obtain smart cards to put a new authentication system in place. However, as time went by they realized that RSA’s cards were not entirely compatible with their hardware, that they require licensing fees for each new piece of software used with the cards and that the cards themselves would have to be replaced every few years. Cryptocard’s smart card system helped solve these problems immediately as the new cards were compatible with everything they needed it to be, contained all-encompassing licenses and would never need to be replaced.

Additionally, the new system enabled them to enhance their security. Through Cryptocard’s Cryptoshield, Kansas City Life’s IT department was able to individually control security customizations for each card. While they regret losing some of the management functions of RSA’s system, Kansas City Life is pleased with their new smart card system.
