Precise receives upgrade order from Dept. of State

Tuesday, September 9, 2008

The U.S. Department of State has ordered an upgrade from Precise Biometrics, a fingerprint authentication technology developer, to its match-on-card system. The upgrade, costing $620,000, consists of adding Windows Vista support to the existing infrastructure as well as on-site support and integration services provided by Precise.

The Precise Match-On-Card system enables the fingerprint data of a user to be stored and matched on a smart card ID so the biometric information is stored only on the card and not in a database at all.

Both the Department of State and Precise are seeing great benefits from their business agreement as the Department of State is reportedly saving millions each year in reduced password administration costs and Precise is seeing increased interest in their product both in other U.S. government agencies and foreign governments. The Department of State is currently issuing match-on-card to more users each month and hopes to have over 60,000 users within a few years. [end]

The first of the orders is from L-1 Identity Solutions for the State of Kentucky, and another is from 3M for the State of Arkansas. Furthermore, the State of South Carolina, a customer for several years, has also decided to extend its current install base.
