Weariness of passwords sees biometric expansion

Computer with built-in fingerprint readers sales have risen 91% in recent months, according to a Silicon article. Findings from a survey showed many feel this jump in sales is due mostly as a result of computer users tiring of dealing with numerous passwords or pass phrases.

The survery also showed that many of those who did not report tiring of passwords reported that they are overly careless with their computer security choosing high risk passwords such as “password” and/or sharing their passwords with coworkers and friends.

Hitachi ID Systems has worked to address the trends in the identity and access management market as reported in the February 2010 report “Market Trends: Identity and Access Management Market, Worldwide 2007-2013” from Gartner. The top trends were identified as: vendor consolidation, passwords acting as primary authentication, strong interest in cloud computing and software-as-a-service, internal controls as the key driver for ID management projects, and the fact that many of these projects continue to fail or run over-budget.

In 2007 internet users averaged 6.5 passwords shared across four different websites with users typing an average of eight passwords daily, according to an Internet Evolution article. As this trend has continued and grown over the years, scientists have continually warned that human brains are not designed for this sort of memorization with many recommending biometrics as the simple fix.

More schools are now using online platforms to distribute and exchange information, such as course documents and online tests. These same online platforms also serve as an administrative tool, containing personal data on students and staff. To prevent identity and data theft, online applications used by schools and universities need to be protected.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) with U.S. Representative Henry Cueller have announced that success with ICE’s biometric-enabled Secure Communities program will see an expansion of the initiative to an additional twelve counties in South Texas. The Secure Communities program is designed to remove illegal citizens living in the U.S. if they have been convicted of a crime by tracking biometric information of those entering the country.

Biometric Signature ID (BSI) announced positive results from a study of their software-only approach to biometric authentication for students using PCs. The new solution utilizes gesture biometrics via a user’s mouse and is envisioned to provide distance-learning students a more effective and secure means of accessing personal student files, discussion groups and other private areas of school networks.

PerSay, a developer of voice-based identification authentication solutions, has announced the availability of new functionality available for use on Apple devices, such as the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. The new technology, called VocalPassword, is designed to replace virtual keyboard use for filling in user names and passwords with voice-based authentication of the user.
