Commerzbank awards payment card contract to Giesecke & Devrient

Wednesday, November 12, 2008

Giesecke & Devrient was awarded a contract to deliver several million debit and credit cards to Commerzbank customers up to 2011. As well as issuing cards under its own name, Commerzbank also issues co-branded cards in partnership with firms such as Steigenberger, TUI, Robinson and Advocard.

The new debit cards will be based on the latest version of the Secure Chip Card Operating System, SECCOS 6.1, in accordance with specifications defined by the German Central Banking Committee. SECCOS-based cards provide a platform for a multitude of applications, including EMV debit girocards, Maestro, V-Pay and EMV credit cards.

The chip can also be used for electronic signatures, to generate transaction numbers for home banking and online shopping, as a source of electronic cash and to implement age restrictions for cash dispensers and on the Internet.

G&D and Commerzbank have previously worked together on new products. One of these was a series of scented cards that emit a fragrance of coffee, orange or cinnamon. [end]

Oracle has released a new version of Oracle Retail Point-of-Service that aims to increase security, operational efficiency and functionality in part by integrating biometrics.

Oracle partnered with DigitalPersonal to add integrated biometrics to the POS package. Users of the software will login using their fingerprint, which will replace the need for PINs or passwords. This feature intends to reduce fraud by eliminating the possibility of unauthorized employees using a manager ID or swipe card to access the POS and approve overrides.
