Charismathics releases new middleware

Charismathics, a provider of IT security components and smart card middleware, announced that the National Institute of Standards and Technology has certified the Charismathics CSSI PIV Middleware as FIPS 201 compliant.

CSSI is PIV middleware that’s validated to the new NIST SP 800-73-2 specification rather than the older PIV specification, ensuring interoperability and compliance with existing as well as future PIV cards. CSSI PIV middleware supports the interoperability of PIV cards at the middleware level, but we also support PIV cards at the application level.


The Charismathics Smart Security Interface middleware supports smart cards from all vendors, and provides support for multiple computer platforms including Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and Solaris. In addition, CSSI provides support for a variety of computer applications including computer logon, disk encryption, SSO, pre-boot authentication, email security and digital signature applications.

CSSI provides support for Microsoft CryptoAPI, PKCS11 and Apple TokenD. Charismathics CSSI also offers an optional TSS component for TPM chips integrated in notebooks and desktop computers that enables the TPM to be utilized just like a smart card. [end] 

Intercede has announced the release of Service Pack 1 for its biometric identity and credential management system MyID PIV v9.

The upgrades included in the new service pack are bringing Personal Identification Verification (PIV), PIV-I and PIV-C credential issuance into one system. Additional upgrades in the service pack are aimed at reducing time and costs involved in help desk functions by improving card expiration date control, policy control, offline unlock, self-service PIN reset and reinstating and re-provisioning of cards all from the system GUI.

Biometric Associates has released its baiMobile 3000MP Bluetooth Smart Card Reader, which is designed specifically for mobile platforms. It supports iOS 4.x for iPhone and iPad and Android OS 2.2 and higher, and it operates with Bluetooth version 2.1 and higher.

Neurotechnology announced that it has developed three versions of embedded solutions for Android-powered devices such as smart phones and tablets.

Specifically, Neurotechnology has ported its VeriFinger Embedded software development kit (SDK), which authenticates user identities via fingerprints, VeriLook Embedded SDK, which authenticates user identities via facial recognition, and MegaMatcher Embedded SDK, which authenticates user identities via both fingerprints and facial recognition. A version that utilizes iris recognition also is in the works.

A variant of malware called Sykipot is circulating that purportedly enables it to hijack U.S. Defense Department Common Access Cards and Windows smart cards, according to Alien Vault Labs. This variant, which appears to have been put together in March 2011, has been seen in dozens of attack samples from the past year.
