Privaris awarded four new patents

Privaris, a developer of biometric products and other identity verification solutions, has announced that they have been awarded four new patents for devices and methods from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. With the addition of these four, Privaris now holds a total of twelve patents.

Of the two patents for devices, the first deals with a smart card reader designed for attaching to and working with a portable biometric device and the second is a patent covering man-machine interfaces such as touch screens capable of also capturing fingerprint images for verification. The two method patents deal with controlling and protecting access to sensitive biometric data and securing enrollment and back-up of data. [end]

U.S. government settles smart card infringement case

The U.S. government has settled an infringement case with Leighton Technologies by agreeing to license its smart cards.

Leighton Technologies, a subsidiary of General Patent, filed a case against the federal government in the U.S. Court of Federal Claims in January 2010. Leighton alleged that 54 federal agencies used its six smart card patents without authorization. Leighton’s technology was also used in e-passports.

Google acquires NFC patents from IBM

Google has acquired 188 patents and 29 patents pending from IBM, some of which concern NFC technology, reports ZDNet.

Adding to the 2,053 IBM patents already turned over to Google in the past year, these new patents cover databases, mobile phones, server infrastructure, wireless telephone systems, NFC and other patents that may relate to Google’s Android mobile operating system.

Accurate Biometrics awarded FBI contract

Accurate Biometric announced it has been awarded a contract from the FBI for its Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System (IAFIS).

The contract is a significant one for Accurate as it enables them to offer same-day FBI fingerprint submission services for criminal background checks to clients such as housing authorities, Indian reservations and banks.

HID granted NFC-related patent

HID Global announced that the company and its parent, ASSA ABLOY, have been notified by the United States Patent Office that their patent, US 2008/0163361, titled “Method and Apparatus for Making a Decision on a Card,” has been allowed and will issue shortly.
