SPVA appoints Heartland Security Representative

Monday, February 8, 2010

The 2010 Secure POS Vendor Alliance (SPVA) Board of Directors welcomes their newly elected Chairman Bob Carr, chief executive officer at Heartland Payment Systems. SPVA , a non-profit organization working with multiple stakeholders to establish security solutions for card payment transactions and information, will have Carr serve as associate member director.

Carr’s contribution to developing a secure payments infrastructure is rooted in his experience at Heartland where he headed the development of end-to-end encryption technology, E3.

E3 is designed to protect sensitive information whenever the card is swiped. The information from the card will be passed along to Heartland’s processing network, and ultimately to the card brands, which will make it virtually impossible to be used in the event of theft or breach.

Carr’s experience includes serving as committee chair of the Payments Processing Information Sharing Council (PPISC), a roundtable discussing the threats associated with practices in the payment industry. [end]

Oracle has released a new version of Oracle Retail Point-of-Service that aims to increase security, operational efficiency and functionality in part by integrating biometrics.

Oracle partnered with DigitalPersonal to add integrated biometrics to the POS package. Users of the software will login using their fingerprint, which will replace the need for PINs or passwords. This feature intends to reduce fraud by eliminating the possibility of unauthorized employees using a manager ID or swipe card to access the POS and approve overrides.
