Anakam’s focus is on bringing low cost two-factor authentication to the masses, says J. Brent Williams, chief technology officer at Anakam. The company does this using out-of-band authentication technology such as text messaging, voice to telephone or voice biometrics.

“We developed a platform for doing two-factor authentication that’s a fully functional equivalent to cards and tokens in the enterprise environment but transitioning that to … to your consumers and patients,” Williams says.

One of the challenges with setting up this type of system was enrolling individuals in the system and verify that the identity is actually tied to the correct individual. “Figure out for sure that the carbon-based life form sitting in front of the computer is the equivalent to the electron-based life form,” Williams says.

Jim Reno, CTO at Arcot, talks about the company’s technology and where he sees authentication heading at the RSA Conference in San Francisco.

“We are able to create a hardware smart card but all implemented in software,” Reno says. “It’s strong two-factor security but it’s got the convenience, cost and usability of passwords.”
