Digital identity can be different things to different people. At the 2010 RSA Conference industry executives gave their definitions of what digital identity is and some of the challenges that exist when it comes to putting a digital ID system in place.

NXP Semiconductors announced that its SmartMX secure contactless microcontroller chip has been chosen to power the new German contactless National Identity card.

The German government has selected NXP as the supplier of an inlay solution containing a SmartMX chip, packaged in an ultra-thin module. Issuance of German contactless ID cards, which will replace the current paper-based IDs, will start in November. More than 60 million cards are expected to be rolled out over the next ten years.

The International Biometrics and Identification Association (IBIA) has announced it has expanded its personal mission to have more of a focus on issues surrounding authentication in data security, identity theft, immigration and homeland security. The IBIA’s approach is expected to be two-pronged wherein they will serve as a forum for industry leaders to directly tackle issues and they intend to become a source for advocacy and education in biometric technology.
