The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services committee for security and privacy is recommending participants in the Nationwide Health Information Network initiative use digital certificates.
The digital certificates should meet the Federal Bridge Certification Authority standards and be issued by a certificate authority that’s a member of the Federal Public Key Infrastructure framework, according to Healthinfosecurity.com.
The team made this recommendation because health care organization will have to exchange information with the federal government. Federal agencies are unlikely to accept a certificate unless it meets the Federal Bridge standards.
The committee will present its recommendation to the Health IT Policy Committee on June 8. The committee advises the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT.
