Password security still a major issue

Password security continues to be a sore spot in combatting data breaches, security experts say.

According to reports from eWEEK, password security is a two-fold problem, with issues stemming from both companies and end-users.


Security experts recommend that companies put emphasis on security over convenience by adding multiple layers of security into their databases and resist relying solely on passwords as a protection mechanism. By adding additional layers of protection, companies can better fight hackers.

Users should also take measures to protect their own information by resisting the temptation to use one password for multiple accounts.

The U.S. Social Security Administration contracted with Experian to add fraud prevention services for secure authentication to access the new online Social Security Statement.

The new online Social Security Statement provides Social Security earnings and benefit information, as well as estimates to help people plan for retirement. It also gives estimates for disability and survivors benefits. With the online statement, users can see whether their earnings are accurately posted to their Social Security records.

SyferLock Technology Corp. has released iOS and Android versions of its GridSoftToken two-factor authentication product.

These versions expand GridSoftToken’s deployability, as it was previously only available for use with the Windows OS. The soft token technology lets users enable two-factor authentication to access systems protected by SyferLock GridGuard by using a mobile device as the second factor.
