The team of CARTES & IDentification and CARTES in ASIA has announced the launch of a new event: CARTES in North America, which will take place from March 5 to March 7, 2012, in Las Vegas.

CARTES in North America has been designed to aid companies and organizations in the smart card, digital security and smart technologies sector develop their business in the large and dynamic North American market. 

A draft of FIPS 201-2 has been released for public comment on the Federal Register.

“The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) publishes this notice to request comments on Draft Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) Publication 201-2, Personal Identity Verification of Federal Employees and Contractors Standard. Draft FIPS 201-2 amends FIPS 201-1 and includes clarifications of existing text, removal of conflicting requirements, additional text to improve clarity, adaptation to changes in the environment since the publication of FIPS 201-1, and specific changes requested by Federal agencies and implementers.” 

Ceelox, a developer of biometric solutions, has announced that they have developed a biometric login option to the online single sign-in service OpenID.

The new biometric solution, called Ceelox ID Online, will enable a users of OpenID to use fingerprint-based authentication to access personal accounts for sites such as online banking, investment sites, internet auction sites and social networking sites they have linked up to their OpenID account.

As OpenID doesn’t specify requirements for how a user authenticates, the protocol is already open to users utilizing biometrics for their authentication.  

Advanced Card Systems (ACS), a developer of smart card solutions, has introduced a new smart card reader that also has an embedded fingerprint sensor.

The smart card reader, called AET65, uses a one-to-one algorithm for matching fingerprints with the one securely stored on the smart card. 

Thursby Software Systems released PKard for Mac software to meet the needs of U.S. Department of Defense Apple users for remote or home access to secure government web sites using Common Access Cards.

PKard is a home/remote version of Thursbys enterprise ADmitMac public key infrastructure line of software that secures directly connected Macs in bases and offices of the US Army and many branches of the U.S. government. All Common Access Cards are supported via Thursby’s Tokend driver technology for access, including next generation cards such as the Oberthur ID One 128 v5.5 and Gemalto TOP DL GX4 144K. 

Ely Kahn was a member of the White House National Security Staff when the idea of creating a a more secure identity management system for the Internet was formed. This eventually turned into the National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace, or NSTIC. Kahn talks about where NSTIC came from and the process that went into creating the strategy.

DERMALOG, a Germany-based manufacturer of biometrics solutions, has presented a new solution at the CeBIT 2011 conference called DERMALOG FingerLogin.

FingerLogin is a standard computer keyboard with an integrated fingerprint scanner designed for use at work stations for fingerprint-basedlogical access control. The solution connects to a computer over a USB connection and has additional fraud detection capabilities such as its Live Finger Scanner which deters a fraudster from using any sort of artificial finger to fool the system.
